Inmate Locator Resources
The California Department of Corrections and several county jails offer inmate locator tools to help determine where you client is currently located. Often, a client will be held in county jail pending the court proceedings and is then transferred to prison after the proceedings have ended. So, it is important to check where your client is before writing or sending service copies of documents filed in the case.
IMPORTANT TIP: When communicating with an incarcerated client by mail, some prisons will not forward correspondence to or from an inmate unless the attorney’s address and Bar Number on the correspondence matches what appears on the California State Bar website. To avoid delays with communications, please be sure that the address that you give to your client is the same as the address that is given to the State Bar for their website.
