Join us for a presentation by Daniel U. Smith, retired Certified Appellate Specialist, member of the California Academy of Appellate Lawyers and author. Mr. Smith teaches the key writing techniques that judges advocate to make legal writing persuasive. This is a general legal writing seminar on how to achieve clarity by writing that exemplifies brevity, simplicity, continuity and specificity.
Attendees will receive a free copy of Mr. Smith’s book, “Persuasive Legal Writing.”
*2 hours of MCLE general credit is offered for this training*

The seminar will be held in person on October 10, 2025, at the California Endowment’s conference center in downtown Oakland. Join us for a day of criminal and dependency breakout sessions, a keynote speaker, lunch, and the opportunity to connect with your colleagues. CADC’s 31st Annual Conference and Seminar May 16-17, 2025
Location: Liberty Station Conference Center, San Diego. The two-day conference will be filled with informative and inspiring presentations, including the Project Directors Roundtable, a report from CADC’s lobbyist and criminal and dependency break-out sessions, providing a total of up to 8.5 hours of MCLE credit.

AB 1186 (Bonta, 2024) eliminated youth restitution fines and made numerous changes to the restitution system in juvenile court. Asher Waite-Jones (Berkeley Law), Caitlin Andersen (Berkeley Law), and Raúl Arroyo-Mendoza (Contra Costa Public Defender’s Office) will explain the changes in statute and provide practice tips on litigating sticky issues. What happens to a youth’s SYTF commitment when they pick up new adult charges? This Zoom Room will focus on the legal limits and how to navigate custody issues when a client either wants to avoid or remain in county jail. We’ll discuss options around modifying or terminating SYTF time, and how to frame arguments when adult prosecution shifts the context of juvenile commitments. Bring your questions and ideas as we collectively explore the gray areas and strategize around best practices. **Eligible for 1 hour of MCLE Credit**
• 4/16 – Suppressing Coerced Confessions: Utilizing the Social Science of False Confessions and Working with the New “Deception Ban” Legislation – Part 2

This training will provide criminal defense attorneys with new tools to litigate suppression of their clients’ custodial statements. In part 2 of the training, we will take a deep dive into the recent deception ban law, Assembly Bill 2644, which went into effect on July 1, 2024, and prohibits law enforcement from using threats, physical harm, deception, or psychologically manipulative interrogation techniques during a custodial interrogation of a person 17 years of age or younger. (Cal. Welf. & Inst. Code § 625.7.) **Eligible for 1.0 Hours of General MCLE**

IDID is proud to present a five part webinar series on fostering diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) in the public defender workplace. In the first presentation of the series, attorney Tatiana Kline will invite attendees to recognize how unintentionally learned biases harm marginally oppressed coworkers and how in order to positively evolve, we must all take steps to actively unlearn and counter these biases. At the end of this session attendees will leave with an understanding of the various forms of implicit bias, the nuanced ways it permeates the workplace, and how to take steps to actively unlearn bias.

Defending Against SVP Commitments On-Demand Course
This course is intended for anyone in Indigent defense looking to learn more about Sexually Violent Predator (SVP) petitions and defending against these civil commitments. Those taking this course from start to finish can expect to spend approximately 9 hours to complete. However, registrants should also feel free to take this course at their own pace. Completion of this course earns 8.25 hours of general MCLE credits.
*Participants are able to earn up to 8.25 hours of MCLE self-study credit.
