Join CAP-LA staff attorneys Maria Morrison and Kathy Caverly for an hour-long Zoom training covering recently decided Supreme Court cases and pending issues where review has been granted by the High Courts. This is your chance to get up to speed on the decisions reshaping California law — and to hear what’s coming down the pipeline before it lands in your briefs.

Presented by USF School of Law legal writing professors Nicole Phillips and Megan Hutchinson, this program provides attorneys with a practical introduction to the responsible use of generative AI in legal practice. The program examines lawyers’ ethical and professional competency obligations, explains key AI concepts, and discusses the integration of AI into legal education and legal practice. The program also addresses AI-assisted research, drafting, case preparation, and productivity tools while learning best practices for supervising and verifying AI-generated work.

Mental health diversion, Penal Code section 1001.36, is an important tool for defenders. By diverting qualified clients away from incarceration and toward treatment, mental health diversion gives individuals a true opportunity for recovery. PC 1001.36 continues to evolve through case law and legislative amendments, requiring periodic refreshers for defenders to advance the most effective arguments for their clients. Join us to learn about recent updates to mental health diversion, as well as tips and tactics for your advocacy in trial court and beyond. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation.

Defending Against SVP Commitments On-Demand Course
This course is intended for anyone in Indigent defense looking to learn more about Sexually Violent Predator (SVP) petitions and defending against these civil commitments. Those taking this course from start to finish can expect to spend approximately 9 hours to complete. However, registrants should also feel free to take this course at their own pace. Completion of this course earns 8.25 hours of general MCLE credits.
*Participants are able to earn up to 8.25 hours of MCLE self-study credit.

Mental Health Diversion – New Resource Page
Introducing a continually growing set of resources on mental health diversion, Pen. Code 1001.36, now live on the Training SharePoint. Resources include recent mental health diversion case summaries, copies of pretrial writ appellate briefing in People v. Superior Court (Taylor) (issue: undue risk of danger to public safety) and Jones v. Superior Court (issue: wrongful termination of diversion), and a one-pager overview of the published Taylor opinion, including arguments prosecutors may raise and potential defense responses.
