› Balancing the Scales: Addressing Compassion Fatigue Through Prevention and Healing

In this virtual program, ADI staff attorneys Christine Johnson and Laura Furness will discuss the definition of compassion fatigue and how it differs from “burnout.” As public interest attorneys, the work we do is heavy and it can impact our physical and mental health. This program will address various tools and techniques available to help recognize and heal from compassion fatigue.
1.0 hours of Wellness Competence MCLE credit will be offered.

Join FDAP on October 10 to earn MCLE credit, meet with your colleagues in person, hear from some great speakers, and connect with the appellate indigent representation community.
This year’s seminar break out sessions include:
- Recent Legal Developments in Criminal, Juvenile, and Civil Commitment Law;
- Looking Back and Moving Forward: Some Nagging Issues in Criminal Law that are Ripe for Revisiting;
- Who, What, Where, When, Why & How: Practical Approaches to Investigating and Presenting Successful Habeas Petitions;
- Using Checklists to Enhance Your Dependency Practice; and
- Redefining the Win in Dependency Appeals
Our joint sessions include:
- Appellate Claims Related to Expert Testimony;
- Ethics Roundup and Brush Up; and
- A conversation with Justice Monique Langhorne Wilson and Justice Charles A. Smiley, both of the First Appellate District, Division One.

Unless otherwise noted these trainings are intended for criminal defense team members only, including attorneys, investigators, social workers, paralegals, mitigation specialists, law office professionals, and other job roles on defense teams.
6/23 – Criminalizing Special Needs: How to Identify and Argue Special Needs at all Phases of the Criminal Process

Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities are overrepresented in the criminal system. Because of this, defenders must know how to advocate for this vulnerable population. In this webinar, attorney Shannon Wentworth and Dr. Wizdom Powell will outline how and why people with special needs are overrepresented in the criminal justice system and how to address special needs in adult and youth cases. At the end of the webinar, attendees will be able to identify and use records to support their representation of persons with special needs.

6/25 – Being Your Whole Self: Fitting in vs. Belonging

Recognizing and understanding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) concepts is important to public defense work. But what is DEI without belonging? According to researcher Brene Brown’s, the opposite of fitting in is belonging. In part five of IDID’s diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in the public defender workplace series, attorney Tatiana Kline will discuss how persons from marginalized communities often try to fit in to the office culture in order to be accepted and how this act of fitting in negatively impacts their sense of belonging. Attendees will leave with an understanding of why feeling a sense of belonging at work matters to their overall well-being and how it contributes to a positive culture in the workplace.

Racial Justice On-Demand Course
“OSPD is excited to open a new on-demand course on the Racial Justice Act. You will learn all the basics, refresh your knowledge, and stay up to date on RJA developments! These videos and written materials have been collected from around the state and are meant to help practitioners regardless of their experience in litigating the RJA.”
*Participants are able to earn up to 10 hours MCLE self-study and specialty credit.

Defending Against SVP Commitments On-Demand Course
This course is intended for anyone in Indigent defense looking to learn more about Sexually Violent Predator (SVP) petitions and defending against these civil commitments. Those taking this course from start to finish can expect to spend approximately 9 hours to complete. However, registrants should also feel free to take this course at their own pace. Completion of this course earns 8.25 hours of general MCLE credits.
*Participants are able to earn up to 8.25 hours of MCLE self-study credit.
