Experienced appellate practitioner Melissa Camacho will share practical tips and reminders for using the California Style Manual effectively in appellate briefing. Learn how proper citation to cases, statutes, and legislative history can strengthen written advocacy in the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court. This program is designed for both newer practitioners and seasoned appellate attorneys seeking a refresher on appellate writing and citation practices.

**1.0 hour of MCLE participatory credit will be provided.**

Learn the language of the criminal courtroom and understand the basic path of a criminal case from arrest to disposition. Webinar participants will learn what makes a misdemeanor different from a felony, and how those differences play out in the life of a criminal case. After this session, you will know which constitutional rights attach at which stage of the proceedings, the critical timelines and significance of time waivers, common pre-trial motions, and some introductory sentencing information.

This webinar is a foundational presentation for newer attorneys, interns, and post-bars who want a solid, practical toolkit for litigating motions to suppress pursuant to California Penal Code section 1538.5. Participants will learn how to issue spot Fourth Amendment violations in a case, understand and apply California’s Harvey-Madden rule, how to research, write, and file your motion, and practice tips for presenting and arguing the motion. The basic timeline and procedure for appealing denials of motions to suppress will also be covered. Reference materials, including OSPD’s Motion Ready Motion to Suppress template will be provided.

Defending Against SVP Commitments On-Demand Course
This course is intended for anyone in Indigent defense looking to learn more about Sexually Violent Predator (SVP) petitions and defending against these civil commitments. Those taking this course from start to finish can expect to spend approximately 9 hours to complete. However, registrants should also feel free to take this course at their own pace. Completion of this course earns 8.25 hours of general MCLE credits.

*Participants are able to earn up to 8.25 hours of MCLE self-study credit.

Mental Health Diversion – New Resource Page
Introducing a continually growing set of resources on mental health diversion, Pen. Code 1001.36, now live on the Training SharePoint. Resources include recent mental health diversion case summaries, copies of pretrial writ appellate briefing in People v. Superior Court (Taylor) (issue: undue risk of danger to public safety) and Jones v. Superior Court (issue: wrongful termination of diversion), and a one-pager overview of the published Taylor opinion, including arguments prosecutors may raise and potential defense responses.
